Blooms In Hand

Hydrangea, Dianthis, Hypericum, Pittsporum. No, this is not a recipe for an ancient potion to potty train my toddler -- it's part of my new floral vocab curtesy of Anna Coy from Blooms in Hand.

Anna's eye-catching arrangements stopped me in my tracks when I stumbled upon her Instagram account a few weeks back. Her elaborate, colorful and straight up gorgeous floral designs screamed my name because, I FREAKIN' LOVE FLOWERS!

I know, I know most women love flowers but I FREAKIN' LOVE them. Since I (freakin') love them and had a big birthday party coming up and wanted to wow my friends with a fab tablescape, I decided I wanted to learn more about crafting the perfect bouquet. I reached out to Anna about a workshop, gathered up a gaggle of mammas in my Playgroup, hit up my friend Brittany up for use of her studio space and class was "in session."

Before I go into the floral experience, here's a bit about Anna. This lady is no joke; she began her career in Interior Design then moved onto Garden Design and finally found her home in Floral Design. Recently transplanted from Philly to Jersey, she runs two successful businesses: To Hold & To Have AND Blooms In Hand. Blooms, her newest endeavor, is a subscription based flower delivery service for Montclair and surrounding towns. Arrangements start at $35 and are delivered as often as the customer likes. Be prepared to to be amazed, this is cool, chic, colorful flower delivery, at your service. Flowers always come "vase-ready" which means they are ready to be ogled. Now, Anna wants to share her florals with her followers, enter "the workshop" and my obsession with blooms blossoming!

...did I mention I love flowers?

Class began with Anna briefly intro-ing us to each flower we would be working with. From there it spiraled wonderfully to us pruning and prodding at the flowers...nipping and nudging them into artful areas of the vase and discussing (many) tricks of the trade. Believe me when I tell you this workshop will leave you with more than your fair share of flower know-how. We worked with 3 to 5 of each flower to create our arrangements. Did you know it's a rule of thumb to work in odd #'s when it comes to flowers stems? Well, now you do!

What I loved about this workshop, aside from the two hours of "me" time, was the unique vision we were encouraged to adopt. We were all using the same flowers but we positioned them differently. It was our personalities that shined through. Some arrangements were loud, others were more under stated. Some were colorful, others were more focused on natural greens. All were perfect.

Anna walked us through the process but she let us experiment with our blooms. We were 'artistes' for the evening. I chatted with friends and cut stems; my favorite being the "Free Spirit Rose." This beauty was peachy/pink perfection -- a huge bloom full of promise and well, spirit. Just the right accompaniment to my summer vibe

As the evening wound down, Anna told me it's not just the actual flowers that encourage her to create these daily doses of prettiness, it's the smiles she gets from customers that really make her swoon. People naturally "feel better" when they receive flowers -- thats that. And after all, what's better than a simple smile from a neighbor.

Me and my final product...the arrangement fit perfectly on my summer fiesta tablescape!
