Calling all cupcake-aholics! You...you...and yes, YOU are gonna want to hire a babysitter for an evening out so you can get on the booze-infused cupcake class bandwagon at Cakeaholic Obsession in Montclair, NJ (it's only a half hour from NYC).
Gals-guys-old friends-new friends-couples-coworkers-whoever, just grab a partner and you are set for night out at Cakeaholic -- owned and operated by the super-sweet (pun intended) and totally cool Julie Johnson. New-ish (1 year) to the Montclair "shop local" scene, Cakeaholic Obsession is masterfully decorated in shades of pink, black and gold -- it's snazzy with a downtown vibe. The decor makes you want to party, so we did!
When I arrived at the bakery with my gaggle of fellow moms & dads, the shop was decked out just for us...complete with pink metallic, oh wait, sorry..."Raspberry Ice" Kitchen Aid mixers AND recipes-ingredients-aprons. I was ready bake it up, after a bit of schmoozing...
Julie supplies the alcohol for the booze-infusion of the cupcakes; you bring the drinks you want to sip while baking, seemed fair to me. We decided to make a little game of it and split up the sexes. Girls got down with the Vanilla and Pink Champagne Cupcakes, boys chose Chocolate Bourbon Cupcakes. The baking challenge was on!
While I won't give away Julie's baking secrets (you'll have to take one of her classes to hear those), I will tell you we learned A LOT of tid-bits about baking. Like, why you should mix the batter for a full 5 minutes, adding coffee as a special ingredient to chocolate cake batter (!) and the proper way to pipe icing IN A FROSTING BAG!
We gals knew each other well but the husbands had never met. They bonded over bourbon and made juvenile jokes while occasionally peeking over to see what their ladies were up to. Julie's class was a step-outside-your-comfort-zone-adventure-kinda-date-night. Movies schmovies, dinner schminner...it was nice to have an activity to do, something different, something memorable to do with friends, where we could let loose, get loud and be creative.
So back to those cupcakes...the vanilla batch was light and fluffy -- literally the best cupcakes I have ever tasted (no lie). Think: airy angel food cake meets moist vanilla cake with a hint of fizzy champagne on top. Heavenly!
The chocolate cupcakes were certainly booze-infused. There was an undocumented amount of alcohol in those bad boys. The chocolate cake had just the right amount of decadent while the frosting had that extra pow-wow-ka-pooey kick of Bourbon.
Alas as our two hours wound down, we had each decorated more than our fair share of cupcakes. Between the four ladies alone we had 36 cupcakes to divvy out and decorate!
Naturally my white icing needed lots of hot pink sugar crystals, funfetti sprinkles and a strawberry on top. Hello...champagne and strawberries needed to be paired up, am I right? My chocolate icing (yes, I stole some chocolate cupcakes) were outfitted in gold flakes and more funfetti. I ate two cupcakes and we called it a night. A 'no-need-to-clean-up-night' because Julie does all of that for you, hallelujah!
Hungry yet? I told you you were going to want to put the Cakeaholic phone # on speed dial! Go on and contact Julie for a sweet evening of good old fashioned baking fun!
