Infants and toddlers are explorers by nature. Curious creatures who thrive on possibility. Limitless NJ in Cedar Grove is the type of gym that recognizes development is key -- that interesting early learning experiences provide a foundation for understanding the world around us.
I knew nothing about sensory play before venturing out to a morning session at Limitless' Open Gym. In the sensory gym, kids spend time stimulating their senses by hopping, skipping, jumping, diving, swinging, sliding and most importantly, learning through athletic activity. At a sensory gym kids work on developing cognitive and social skills through, in my special scientific terms: creative, squishy wushy play.
Limitless is a quick ride from Montclair and surrounding towns, down Pompton Ave (think Willowbrook Mall area). It's a huge structure and the facility is spotless. They've got a waiting room full of toys just for kids and the gym is bustling with athletic movers and shakers. But let's focus on the sensory gym...
My first impression? Holy Moly, what is this bright and imaginative dreamworld I just walked into? I quickly texted a friend to tell her I felt like I was on the set of a Nickelodeon show. Neon, paint-splattered walls, multi-colored plush pillows (from Yogibo), kooky stairs, lots of swings and bounce balls filled the space. A dream-room come true for a color lover like myself. Right off the bat I loved the "sense" I got from just being in such an imaginative space. How could you not have fun in here?
Shep and I spent an hour familiarizing ourselves with the gym. We had never been to such a place - it had beauty and braun! As I've said before, even though my son is just 20 months old, he is a 'sporty beast.' At most kiddie gyms, he runs rampant, bouncing off the walls trying everything, yet not really giving anything a chance.
At Limitless, the Co-owner Raina was there to facilitate what I would call smart play. We were encouraged to run around but we made smart decisions about what to do with our feet, hands and bodies. We were encouraged to dive in...Shep was totally into this FUNtional fitness.
My mini and I are an adventurous team. We went to the gym a few weeks in a row and are planning to return after the holidays for more sense-sational moments.
